What is superannuation?
In Australia, superannuation is basically your pension fund. All people working in Australia who earn over $450 per month must pay into a ‘super fund’. A payment of 9.5% of your wage will be made by your employer but this is additional to your earnings. So for non-residents or temporary residents who have worked in Australia on a valid visa, this is essentially a saving fund that you can draw on once your visa has expired and you have left the country.
How do I get a superannuation refund?
If you are a non-resident who has worked in Australia and has departed Australia you may be eligible for a Superannuation refund, or ‘Super Refund’ as the Aussies like to call it. At backpay.com we can help you find your lost superannuation and claim back any owed Super Funds. To find out if you are owed a refund simply sill in our online Superannuation Refund application form. Our team can assist you with the whole process and it will be a lot less stressful than making the application yourself via the ATO (Australia Tax Office).
How much will your superannuation refund be?
While working in Australia your employer paid a total of 9.5% of your total wage into a Superannuation fund (Super Fund), the Government will take 68% if you’re on a working holiday visa, or if you were on a 457 Visa or another temporary work visa, then you could only be taxed around 38%. What ever the case, you’re owed money back and as it stands the Australian Government is holding around $450 million dollars of unclaimed Superannuation from people just like you. If you do not claim back your superannuation your money will be absorbed by Super Fund account in fees and the Aussie government. Whatever you’re owed, we recommend you make a claim and get back some of your hard earned cash. On average we secure refunds of around $1900 if you worked in Australia for 2 years.
What payment can you expect back?
Once we have your application we will review your earnings and let you know. Each Superannuation refund is different and the amount of Super you’ll get back will be down to your personal circumstances, work completed and type of visa you were in Australia working on.
How long does it take to get your superannuation refund?
Once you make the superannuation refund application we estimate around 30 days, although we have managed to do this in around 10 days.
